Barbara Y Croft grew up in southeastern Pennsylvania and northern New Jersey. She earned a B.S. in Chemistry from Swarthmore College and a Ph.D. in Theoretical Physical Chemistry from the Johns Hopkins University. While at Johns Hopkins, she was a T.A. in Freshman Chemistry and tutored in downtown Baltimore. Barbara began her career at a small contract research company in Baltimore. She shortly moved to Charlottesville, VA, first working in the University of Virginia Computer Center, then, for 29 years, in the Radiology Department of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. During this time, she taught Nuclear Medicine Technologists, coaching her students through their Board exams. She was Practice Manager of the Radiology Department for 3 years. She served as a member of the School of Medicine Institutional Review Board for 5 years. She was also Treasurer and President of the UVA Chapter of the American Association of University Professors. Barbara joined the Cancer Imaging Program of the National Cancer Institute in 1999 as a Program Director, working with applicants and grantees. She managed a portfolio of grants and applications and wrote funding announcements. To spread information about the availability of grant funding, she traveled to many association meetings and grant review committee meetings, Barbara was active outside the University with the Virginia Council on Human Relations. She was a member of the Food and Drug Administration Radiopharmaceutical Advisory Committee. She served at the Chapter and National levels in the Society of Nuclear Medicine (now the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Medical Imaging). She was President of the SNM in 1988-89. She is a Fellow of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging and of the American College of Nuclear Medicine. Barbara traveled for the International Atomic Energy Agency as an Expert to Colombia, Uruguay, Guatemala, Chile, Sri Lanka, Armenia, and Mexico. She served as a Visiting Professor at the University of the State of Mexico in Toluca. Barbara is deeply inspired by George Gopen’s scholarship, having witnessed the miraculous results his writing curriculum has produced for grant-seekers of all disciplines. As a founding member of the Gopen Porter Partnership, LLC, she is eager to promote his scholarship so that it reaches people in every profession around the world that makes use of the English Language.
